Korean Double Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time

Surprisingly or not, blepharoplasty aka double eyelid surgery is among the most common and most desired cosmetic surgical interventions in Singapore. This correction aims to make the eyes rounder and to create a fold on the upper lids. The effect of double eyelids is achieved by cutting a small part of the surface of the eyelid so that it does not cover the eyelid line.

In most cases, the manipulation comes as a gift from parents when their children finish school. Parents are convinced that by correcting the eye shape and improving the overall appearance, their child has a better chance of succeeding in life. When this distinctive trait of the face is eliminated, it becomes more graceful, the eyes look bigger and more open which creates a better first impression. Due to the overcrowding in Singapore and the huge competition in the job markets, the locals believe that it opens the door to development in other countries, where they will not be seen as different because of the eye shape.

According to many Asian people, double eyelids are a guarantee of beauty, as monolid eyes give the appearance of fatigue and drowsiness, even when this is not the case. However, others believe that it is a pure and simple idealization of Western norms of beauty. Last but not least, the popularity of the procedure is for the reason that it is not too expensive and the recovery is much faster than in other plastic surgeries such as rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, or liposuction.

Korean Double eyelid surgery recovery

The recovery time for Korean double eyelid surgery is around two weeks then the patients can resume their normal activity. However, the complete results can be seen in several months. While in recovery, most of the individuals experience temporary symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, pain, and bruising. These complaints will begin to disappear slowly after the first week after the surgery is over. Your surgeon will give you post-op instructions when you have your first consultation after the treatment. Following them strictly is essential for your healing.

There are two ways in which double eyelid surgery is performed. One an incision method where the surgeon removes some off the extra fat. This is achieved by cutting the eyelid skin which creates a nice and visible crease. Another common correction method is the so-called suture technique or more commonly referred to as non-incisional double eyelid surgery. The difference in this technique is that the fold is created by creating very small in size holes on the upper lid. These small stabs are also useful for removing excess fat. What method will be used non-incision or incision method, your personal preferences and how much excess skin you have are the major determining factors.

Local anaesthesia is used for both incisional and suture technique. Also, those eyelid surgery procedures they do not require downtime so you will be able to go home after the manipulation.

In the following lines, you will find detailed information about the recovery from both types of techniques - incisional double eyelid surgery and the non-incision technique. We will also give you some tips and recommendations that may help you to speed up the healing process.

Asian double eyelid surgery recovery

The healing period from Asian double eyelid surgery or so-called Asian blepharoplasty is about 2 to 4 weeks. A large number of patients are comfortable in public after 14 days, however, the complete recovery from the procedure usually takes 4 weeks. You may experience swollen eyes as well as pain, bruising, and discolouration on the sclera (white of the eyes).

Asian blepharoplasty is basically the same as traditional blepharoplasty. The major difference between both is that traditional eyelid surgery method is used more often as a rejuvenating procedure. It means, even individuals that have a natural fold on their eyelid may want to get the operation in order to tighten their skin and “open” their eyes. Thanks to that the face looks refreshed and younger. On the other hand, Asian blepharoplasty aims to create a visible fold on the upper eyelid. This procedure, in particular, is among the most wanted corrections in Singapore as about 50 percent of Asians are monolid and they don’t have defined fold on their eyelids.

Just as traditional double eyelid surgery, Asian blepharoplasty is also done in two different ways - by using the non-incisional, or incision methods.

Non-incisional double eyelid surgery recovery time

With non-incisional (suture) double eyelid surgery method the recovery time is two weeks. However, if you feel well you may recommence your normal activity sooner - 2 to 3 days after the operation. It is important to discuss this with your surgeon. You don't have to worry if you have mild swelling and bruising following the operation. They will disappear in a few days.

The surgery is very quick as it takes less than 30 minutes. It is done under local anaesthesia with no downtime. The non-incision method is a very popular approach among Singaporeans and Asians because it not as expensive as the incision method, it is quicker, scarless, and has a fast recovery. Although this technique has its cons. One of them is that the double eyelid crease nay decrease over time and therefore it is not permanent. Another thing about the non-incisional method is that it may not be very effective for someone who has a large amount of excess skin.

Incisional double eyelid surgery recovery

The average time it takes to recover from incisional double eyelid surgery is up to two weeks. Within this time you might be able to return to your normal activity. However, the complete recovery and final results are typically seen in 5 to 6 months. The incision method is one of the most popular and desired types of double eyelid fold surgery. The end results will look natural with almost invisible scars on the incision line.

Incisional double eyelid surgery is done under local anaesthesia as well as it is an outpatient procedure. So within a few hours after the operation, you will be able to go home.

You should be prepared for the fact that the first few days after the manipulation you will be accompanied by the symptoms such as dryness of the cornea, pain, swelling, and bruising. In rare cases, this surgery method may cause side effects like infection, allergic reaction, or temporary vision changes. This can be avoided by following the surgeon's pre-op and post-op recommendations.

Right away after double eyelid surgery, you may develop mild to severe swelling. It will disappear in seven to ten days. Most of the patients also experience bruising during the postoperative period. The bruises are usually formed around the eyes after the surgery. However, you shouldn't be worried about them because they will completely disappear after around 3 weeks (although in some cases the natural skin colour is restored in two weeks). The recovery period is also accompanied by increased sensitivity of the eyes.

Many patients complain of pain and discomfort. These feelings are natural but you should be aware that double eyelid surgery certainly requires careful care for the eyes as well as a series of preventive procedures. Post-operation, the surgeon will give you special instructions that are essential for your healing period. During the first hours, it is good to apply a cold compress on your eyelids to minimize swelling and the risk of other unpleasant complications. Your doctor may also prescribe eye drops and ointments to reduce dryness and prevent inflammation. You can take painkillers to reduce the discomfort.

If the operation is not performed using self-absorbing suture material, the sutures have to be removed. There is no deadline set for this procedure, it all depends on the individual characteristics of the skin and its recovery course. If the skin has responded well, without inflammation and pain does not appear, the sutures are removed 6-7 days after the operation. If you have any complications and problems, you will have to wait. In any case, the sutures must be removed no later than seven days after eyelid fold surgery. From that moment on, the postoperative enters a new stage. The patient must be especially careful and to avoid damaging to the wound site. The risk of bleeding is still high. Any pressure or careless movement can damage and deform the wound.

Once the sutures are removed, there is significant eye relief. But in this period it is necessary to observe the following rules:

  • do not exercise (no gym!);
  • to prevent blood flow to the eyelids you need to sleep on a high pillow;
  • you shouldn't use any makeup for ten days;
  • do not wear contact lens;
  • do not strain your eyes - avoid watching TV, using a computer, or reading;
  • you should not use "hot" procedures such as a hot bath, sauna, or steam bath;
  • do not to provoke bloating and do not worsen the situation - you should carefully monitor your diet to exclude salty, spicy, smoked foods and alcohol;
  • quit smoking during your healing period.

Full rehabilitation will take from two weeks to two months.
